Outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia bacteremia in a pediatric hospital due to contamination of lipid emulsion stoppers.

We describe a 7-month outbreak of nosocomial Burkholderia cepacia bacteremia involving eight children in a pediatric hospital and the results of epidemiological investigations. A B. cepacia strain genotypically identical to the blood isolates was recovered from the upper surface of capped rubber stoppers of bottles of a commercial lipid emulsion used for parenteral nutrition.

Burkholderia cepacia – outbreak in obstetric patients due to intrinsic contamination of non-sterile ultrasound gel

Introduction / objectives Ultrasound gel is a potential source of infection. Nonsterile ultra-sound gels can be contaminated due to manufacturing procedures and also during usage of opened bottles. We report a cluster of eight clinical cases of vaginal colonization (one clinically proven colpitis) with Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) due to intrinsically contaminated ultrasound gel in obstetr...

Hospitalary outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia bacteremia associated with a decrease of chlorination of water system

Results Between 27/3/2008 and 3/2/2008, 4 pts in the HO unit developed BC bacteremia. In March 2008, 6 ptes developed chills during haemodialysis (HD), blood cultures didn’t grow BC. At 15/4/ 2008 another patient in HO unit developed bacteraemia by BC. In the HO unit the molecular biology confirmed a clonal outbreak. The crops of antiseptic solutions, soap, tap water, and bottled water showed n...

Polyclonal outbreak of bacteremia caused by Burkholderia cepacia complex and the presumptive role of ultrasound gel.

A nosocomial polyclonal outbreak associated to bacteremia caused by different Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) species and clones is reported. Molecular characterization identified Burkholderia stabilis, Burkholderia contaminans, and Burkholderia ambifaria among BCC isolates obtained from patients in neonatal and adult intensive care units. BCC was also isolated from an intrinsically contamin...

Outcome of Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) cepacia colonisation in children with cystic fibrosis following a hospital outbreak.

BACKGROUND While there are reports on the outcome in adults and teenagers with cystic fibrosis of colonisation with Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) cepacia, there is little information in children. METHODS In December 1991 only one of 115 children with cystic fibrosis attending a paediatric centre was colonised with B cepacia. Over the next 12 months there was a rapid increase with 23 (20%) becomi...
